A short and clear introduction to the International Patient Summary (IPS)

11 September 2023

The International Patient Summary is a minimal and non-exhaustive set of basic clinical data of a patient, specialty-agnostic, condition-independent, but readily usable by all clinicians for the (un)scheduled patient care away from the patient’s home health system.

Created originally by a CEN/TC 251 Project Team, in close collaboration with HL7 and IHE, the International Patient Summary is getting a lot of attention across the globe and several countries are starting to implement the IPS within and across jurisdictions. The IPS is gaining traction within Europe, in support of the cross-border patient summary exchange in MyHealth@EU, based on the European Guideline as published by the eHealth Network.

Internationally a team is working to extend and improve the International Patient Summary documentation and resolving all the issues brought forward.

The team created a very interesting video that introduces you to the IPS work and the standards, profiles and terminologies involved.

Please watch the video on YouTube. More IPS materials can be found on the IPS Website.
